Seaweed Farming

Thanks to Alasdair O'Dell of SAMS for this photo.

WHAM has noticed that the number of mariculture marine licence applications has been increasing recently. All around our coast businesses are exploring the opportunities associated with seaweed farming. This low environmental impact activity usually doesn’t impact on boating as the growing seaweed needs space, tide and depth that puts it in waters we can easily navigate around, however we do keep a close eye on new applications and welcome feedback from members about any issues or concerns they may have.

Scottish Government policy on seaweed farming..

Please note that seaweed farming is distinct from seaweed harvesting; more about that here.
